Eco-custom - Energy-efficient lighting solution for vehicle charging stations in Copenhagen

Electric vehicle charging stations are becoming an integral part of our urban infrastructure, and their growing importance to the green future of transportation presents new challenges, but also incredible opportunities. In the context of global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and increase sustainability, it is not only the electric car that is becoming important, but also the infrastructure that supports it.

Hence, when Danmind APS took on the challenge of create lighting for EWII's vehicle charging stations at Copenhagen Airport, we decided to assist them and provide a solution that would meet their high technical expectations, but also be in line with the spirit of ecology and sustainability. Our goal was to create lighting that reduces CO2 emissions by up to 80%, but also uses resources in an efficient and environmentally friendly way.

Utilizing the latest LED technology that has not only high energy efficiency but also a minimal carbon footprint, and designing a lighting system based on biodegradable materials and technologies, we are proud to present our innovative approach to lighting the vehicle charging stations in Copenhagen. This is the story of our commitment to the green future of transportation.

SOLUTION

This project was full of technological challenges that pushed us to modify our original assumptions and plans. The lighting design required numerous consultations, which allowed us to adapt it and develop the optimal solution for the newly created facility. We encountered four significant technical challenges on the way to success.

Technical challenge – installation method

The Mifor profile originally selected by the distributor only allowed for suspended mounting, while the project required surface mounting. Therefore, KLUS' R&D department designed special fixtures that allowed surface mounting. When the product development engineers created and put this solution into production, and the first batch was about to be produced, it became apparent that the profile needed to be mounted to the roof rafters. At the design stage, the spacing of the rafters was not known to us, so it was impossible to precisely plan the placement of the fasteners in the Mifor system, which was necessary for proper installation.

Technical challenge – product adaptation

The modification of the design and the need for flexible mounting to the rafters forced us to reconsider the customer's needs. It turned out that the Serpent profile would be a more suitable solution. This luminaire, made of a double-chamber profile made of low-carbon 6060 T66 aluminum, is intended for creating light strings, with the possibility of combining into lines and larger structures. This is possible thanks to hook fasteners that limit the connection gaps. The whole is finished with end caps made of non-flammable plastic.

In addition, the Serpent profile is in line with the idea of eco-friendly design of vehicle charging stations, as it is made of raw material with a low carbon footprint. The Serpent luminaire consists of modules that enable the creation of custom and original lighting forms, as well as quick and easy installation and high luminous efficiency. With this solution, it is possible not only to illuminate the charging station efficiently, but also to reduce its negative impact on the environment.

Technical challenge – extreme conditions

Outdoor use of the product involves operation of the luminaire's components in demanding conditions. Polycarbonate covers/diffusers tend to shrink at low temperatures and expand at high temperatures, which can lead to gaps between the covers. To avoid the negative impact of these changes on the visual effect of the luminaire, our R&D department has designed special end caps. They mask the changes in the diffuser, eliminating the effect of shrinkage and expansion of the covers, which was expected to positively affect the final aesthetic effect.

Technical challenge – tightness

A key element of any outdoor luminaire is its tightness, which is important for durability and safety. To ensure that the luminaire based on the Serpent profile meets the highest standards, after consulting with distributor Danmind, which has extensive experience in the installation of lighting projects, we offered the investor an innovative solution – sealing the LED strips with a special nanospray. Although this is not a standard offer from KLUŚ, it is a perfect example of our out-of-the-box approach to customizing products for individual customer needs. The applied nanospray protects the LED tape from water, moisture and steam, minimizing the risk of failure and ensuring safe operation of the electrical system.

With the great flexibility and innovation of our R&D and COOP (Offer and Project Service Center) departments, and in cooperation with our creative and experienced distributor Danmind, we successfully redesigned the original lighting system, adapting it to the unique requirements of the project. The use of the Serpent luminaire, special end caps and nanospray technology ensured not only excellent functionality, but also aesthetics and installation safety.

The result of this work was a modern lighting installation, harmoniously integrated both visually and ideologically into the entire project. The luminaire in the form of rings is a perfect multiplication of the body of the building itself, creating a coherent and modern whole. A total of 18 rings with a diameter of 2.5 meters each were used.

The entire project was completed with luminaires based on the LIPOD-50 profile, adapted by bending to the circular shape of the outer and inner edge of the roof. The total length of the Lipod profile used was 190 m. The roof edge lighting was designed to create color harmony with the customer's logo, so we decided to use RGB tape.
